Our #CuratedAsset today is an interesting research project on the link between post-traumatic stress and emotion regulation in children. This topic is important as children are more likely to be affected by traumatic events they experience than adults, so need to be able to express themselves in a healthy way. Avoidant emotion regulation strategies are more likely in people with PTSD, and it had been found that these avoidant strategies worsen their levels of post-traumatic stress symptoms. A common strategy is expressive suppression – hiding facial expressions, laughter or crying for example. With this in mind, we can look at ways of helping children with PTSD deal with their symptoms and emotion regulation, and can also help us in the workplace to create a healthy environment.
