Today’s #CuratedResource is a video centred around our use of language and what this can do for us. James Pennebaker shares his research into function words and, more specifically, pronouns. He looks into mental health, status and groups and what can be determined by looking at people’s language in these areas. In the workplace, communication is crucial for team development. This research can be used to draw focus on how companies and their employees can effectively communicate with each other. It is interesting how our use of a seemingly ‘boring’ part of language actually helps us to understand each other in a more in depth way. The use of pronouns can highlight social status of different people; with those higher in status appear to use first person pronouns the least.
